. the pentagon will increase the staff on cyber command from 900 to 5,000 employees for the next few years. it calls for reorganizing the d.o.d.'s command to a semis kateed cyber fighting machine. it will be divided into three areas: national mission forces to protect our nation's electric grid from outside attack. combat mission forces, and cyber protection forces to fortify the pentagon's computer networks. it's a brave new virtual world and some experts say america's already late to the game when it comes to fighting cyber wars. with me from washington, d.c. to talk about what is needed to boost cyber security in the pentagon is allen paul, director of research at the sans institute. he's co-chair of the secretary of homeland securities task force on cyber skills. welcome to the war room, allen. >> thank you michael. >> michael: you know, president obama announced what are saying are long awaited cyber security executive order in the state of the union address. let's listen to the president talk about what he has to say on the other side. >> earlier today i signed a new executive order

on the pentagon than allow for any higher tax ref it's an interesting statement of conservative priorities at this point to me. >> michael, there was an ad lib line in the state of the union. it seemed to me at least, look, i don't want to do benefit cuts in social security unless republicans first open up on more revenue. let's say in the unlikely event republicans do say they're open to more revenue, whether it's closing loopholes, deduction, there was a letter yesterday calling on obama to flatly rule out any benefit cuts in medicare, medicaid, social security and that would include chained cpi. give as you little preview if obama does go down this road what he's going to be facing within his own party if he touches chained cpi, for instance. >> there is going to be really strong opposition. i think a lot of the opposition may be all 100 of the members who signed that member were entirely sincere about it. at the same time, when deal get done in washington, there's a necessary degree of posturing and theatrics. you need to have both sides for something to get done here are going to need

your perspective on the pentagon's role in securing our embassies? we just had a near suicide attack, if you will, suicide bomber, at an embassy in turkey just last week. what can be done more than what has been done now? >> the important things to do are first of all you've got to build up the host country capacity. in the end, these embassies do depend on host country, the details that provide security. so you've got to try to develop that. >> this shouldn't be more marines? >> no, no. let me get the rest of the part of it. you have to harden these embassies as much as possible. and third, we have been working with the ste department to determine whether additional marines ought to be assigned to that area. and in the end, the final alternative is our ability to respond in having our troops in a position where they can respond quickly. but i have to tell you, a lot of that still is dependent on whether intelligence tells us that we've got a big problem, and gives us enough warning so that we can get to the place to respond. >> did you have enough time to get there in time? >> no. >
